LOSING LUNG VOLUME?

The aging process is associated with deterioration in every system and organ of the human body. Different tissues show this decline in varying ways. There are similarities insofar as cellular decay and inadequacy is concerned. This can be addressed with micronutrient supplements. On a more macro level, limiting the corrosion requires preventions and interventions unique to the organ involved.

The lungs lose volume and elasticity. Aging causes this degeneration. Exposures to cigarettes, air pollution, and other particulates accelerate the process. Abnormalities in inspired air in the home or workplace contribute to the problem. Injury from infection or inflammation worsen lung anatomy and function.

Lung expansion exercises can make a world less pain and more healing. Review my blog: “PROTECT THE LUNGS AND FIGHT COVID-19” from April 20, 2020 on this subject.

Abdominal breathing increases the amount of lung being inflated. I have described this technique in the above article. Like any routine, it should be practiced daily to be successful

An Incentive Spirometer is a small plastic device with either a cylinder or three balls that you raise by inhaling. These are given to post-operative patients. They can also be purchased from pharmacies, medical supply sores, and online.

Aerobic exercise also improves pulmonary volume and function. If you are not used to getting your heart beating faster, there are many low-level activities to start. Walking slowly is effective if you are mostly sedentary. There is equipment that takes advantage of just arm motion to achieve the same goal. Hand cycles, rowing machines, endless rope climbers, and lifting light weights multiple times are examples of activities that stimulate the breathing.

Healthy hearty lungs means more oxygen for all the organs. Every cell has increased vigor. A person lives with greater energy and less debility. The aging process is inhibited. It all fits together.
