THINGS THAT MAKE LIFE EASIER AND HEALTHIER — Part 1

Mark all your dark personal objects with yellow reflecting tape to make them more visible in shadows and elsewhere so you don’t forget them someplace. Your eye will be more attracted to the tape when you are leaving a restaurant, motel, someone’s house, your car, a movie theater, etc. Put the tape on a wallet, glasses case, checkbook, containers for earphones and other objects, cell phone, comb (tape the handle), dark sandals, and similar objects,

Always carry a nail clipper to deal with annoying and painful hangnails. This dangling piece of skin can be caused by dry skin. It is also known as a paronychium. If you pull it off, it can hurt and lead to an infection. You can carry this onto an airplane. Nail clippers are also handy if you want to cut a loose thread. Pulling may promote unraveling.

A small 2-¼ inch knife has many appliances that can be useful and is easy to keep on your person. A plastic toothpick, knife, scissors, file, and tweezers are usually included. Don’t try to board an airplane carrying a knife. they’ll take it away.

Chew on a raw carrot to clean your teeth after eating.  It also freshens your mouth. Unless you don’t like carrots; then forget it.

Watch where you step while walking. Look ahead a few steps if you want to view the path. Then you can glance up for a moment at a time. If you want to look around, stop and gaze. There are many obstacles on sidewalks, stairs, paths in the woods, your own backyard, cobblestone streets, and everywhere else. The roads in life are uneven. They are topped by many objects and other stuff. If you trip and fall, the consequences can be disabling. Even young folks injure themselves.

Chew gum to stay awake if you tend to nod off in the movie theater, watching TV, etc. You will have to direct some attention to the chewing activity, but this becomes minimal. Your ability to enjoy the presentation will be enhanced.

Instead of always relying on your ever-present GPS, memorize a map to get you where you want to go. This will exercise your brain. It needs the workout. Use it or lose it. Especially memorize the route to places that you frequent, rather than always rely on the machine. Expand your memory to more destinations.

Learn boisterous songs and sing them while driving if you feel sleepy. Singing upbeat songs will help you stay awake. And there are collateral benefits. ßinging loudly strengthens your lungs and circulation, resulting in increased resistance to respiratory illness in particular and disease in general. If other people in your car start yelling at you to stop pretending you can sing, well, I suppose you have a choice to make. Someone else should drive next time.

If you have pain in the joint where the large toe meets the foot (the first metatarsal phalangeal joint), try wearing chemical toe warmers on it. These flexible pads safely heat up for about 5 hours. Place them smoothly over thin socks to cover the  area of discomfort. Then gently slip loose fitting shoes on to keep them in place. You can wrap them around the joint and wear them everyday. Over time, the pain is less. You can use this technique over any achy joint.
