THINGS THAT MAKE LIFE EASIER AND HEALTHIER – PART 4

It’s fun relaxing in a comfortable reclining easy chair. If you do decide to buy one, resist those that are electrical and do all the work for you. It may seem insignificant, but even that little extra effort is worth it. After all, you are going to be reclining. So, require yourself to use a little energy to get there and make the experience more rewarding because you helped to create it every time you lean back.

Smells are particulate. In your bathroom, cover your toothbrush with a small plastic cup to keep particles off of it.

Read something funny before going to bed. Many people find that reading a computer screen or watching TV at night impairs sleep. Read a book or a kindle. Accumulate things that will reliably make you laugh.  Whether a book, a video, a CD, a collection of humor columns or jokes, or anything else, be sure to partake of it daily so you are assured of laughing every day.

If you like to take a walk with friends, carry 10-15 pounds in a small backpack. It should be held over both shoulders with the weight evenly distributed. Keep a dedicated knapsack handy at all times for this purpose. This will increase calorie consumption, strengthen your bones, and improve circulation. You will have more energy. You will lose weight if that is your goal. You can do this even if you use a cane or a walker.

Enjoy eating garlic? Want to minimize the garlic smell that is offensive to others?  Freshen the odor emanating from your lungs by also eating fresh parsley.

Pipe cleaners are handy tools. They have wire inside for strength and fuzzy outside for ease of use. They can hold things together, like a little knife and a nail clipper. Use one to “lock” a suitcase; a little more difficult for someone to open. Put one through a zipper handle to keep it locked. If the zipper handle breaks, you can replace it with a pipe cleaner. Or to extend the zipper handle for ease of use. Make a strong loop handle on a water bottle. Hang things like a towel or a tool. Keep the draw strings on your bag closed by looping the pipe cleaner through. Hang cooking utensils. Store rubber bands on a pipe cleaner for easy access, availability, and visualization.

Wear arch supports in your shoes. While standing still, you should be aware of pressure on the middle of the plantar fascia. It can have a large or small sensation. Decide which is best for you based on comfort.

Men. When you urinate, does it spray out? Does it splash back? Does your significant other complain about the yellow color on the seat or floor? About the residual odor? Acquire the tools to give yourself a directed stream. At least in your home. Go to a home improvement store and buy a 3 foot long and 1 inch diameter PVC tube. Keep it handy next to the toilet in a little plastic container with bleach in it. When the need arises: place one end upon the glans, hover the other end above the water, and explode. Problem solved. Change the bleach and rinse the tube often. Obviously, this technique does not travel well. But that’s up to you.
