THINGS THAT MAKE LIFE EASIER AND HEALTHIER — Part 8

Do you have little annoying benign skin growths? Surgery is not indicated, insurance won’t cover it, and removal leaves a scar. But there are other things you can try. First, have the lesion examined by a dermatologist to make sure it is, indeed, benign. Hypertrophic keratosis and lentigines are benign.

One treatment involving our old friend, duct tape, may come in handy here. Stick a piece of duct tape onto the lesion. Try to make it cover only the growth. Put an adhesive bandage over this so it will hold the tape in place. After 4 days, remove the duct tape and file the white spot down with an emory board or sandpaper. Repeat until the growth is gone. If it recurs, do it again.

Another thing to try is using clear nail polish. The cheapest one you can find. Coat the lesion with the polish 3-4 times a day. It will not harm normal skin. Eventually, the layers of dried polish will fall off, taking some of the growth with it. Repeat until there is nothing left. Recurrences may happen, and should be addressed with repeat applications. This could be a long process, but you may find it worthwhile.

You know when you wear your gym shoes or running shoes or walking shoes, and you take a walk in a park or wooded area, and lots of little grass and leaves stick to the bottom of the shoe? Then you come home and trek around the house, leaving nature all over the floors and carpets. And it’s really hard to remove this tiny debris from the bottom of the shoe.

Help is at hand. Let the shoe dry overnight. then take a steel brush, like you might use to clean a grill. Rub it on the shoe and the stuff will fall off.

Like to eat fish?

Try it with horseradish. They go well together.

Instead of high-fat tartar sauce to flavor your marine dinner, Horseradish brings out the flavor. You can use very little so it’s just a hint of hot, or you can overwhelm and clear your sinuses.

Make your next lox and bagel sandwich with horseradish, instead of cream cheese. It’s a lot healthier because there is no fat in horseradish.
